SCAdian of the month

Lady Maria Beatriz la Mora (Bambi)

When did you start in the SCA?

I believe I went to my first SCA event in 1988, fall. Mistress Kathea von Linz whom I had met that summer after purchasing one of her ealier Period Patterns through a specialty store, invited me to be on her team for the first ever GarbWars in Bright Hills. There were 3 teams. Our team won, I got to keep the dress we made {red velvet german ren} and I was hooked.

Where did you start your SCA adventure?

I lived in the DC area so at the time we classified as Storvik in Atlantia but , though I lived in the same zip code for 20 years, my Barony change three times,

What is your favorite part of the SCA?

I love the fact that the SCA, like any society, needs people of all interests to function well, everyone eats and wears clothes and needs to communicate but not everyone fights or sews or does calligraphy or blacksmithing or event planning or plays a musical instrument or any number of skills yet all these skills and more had a counterpart in period and most folks in period had a huge subset or the couldn’t have survived. University is only a part of the amazing options for learning a little of everything. I just love that.

What was your most memorable event in the SCA so far?

My most memorable event in the SCA, oh, that’s kind of hard. There have been a few. My very first Pennsic,19. I had been there a week when someone offered to take mr on a night tour. We walked down to the Trimarian royal encampment and walked up to a celtic CasTle with stone walls and torchlight and a chapel and throne tent and it was sort of like magic. It was in another place, another time and it was real. That was one of many but it was the first

What would you tell a newcomer to look forward to in the SCA?

I tell everyone newcomers and folks who are just curious about my strange unheard of use of my free time. The SCA is where I’ve raised my child, learned anything from cooking skills to tent making, found lifelong friends, a family no matter where I ended up. My daughter married the guy she met and played with for most of her pennsics. It’s where you can learn anything that interests you and you never know why that will be till you see it.
