When did you start in the SCA?
My first Event was in 1991. It was the 8th Estrella War (next year will be the 32nd). Some friends of mine had just started in the SCA and they told me that the SCA was a place where I could learn lots of dirty songs and bash people in the head with clubs. That was pretty much all it took to hook me.
Where did you start your SCA adventure?
I was going to college in Flagstaff, Arizona. That is now the Barony of Ered Sul in the Kingdom of Atenveldt, although at the time it was only the ‘March’ of Ered Sul. Other than Estrella, which is quite large, my first few events were all in abandoned farm fields with no facilities and a port-a-john or two.
What is your favorite part of the SCA?
People. Other whack-job nutty types who want to dress up in funny clothes and proclaim that chivalry is not quite dead, at least not this weekend.
What was your most memorable event in the SCA so far?
The Barony held a small event called the Groggy Griffin Tavern several years back. Lord Jared the Potter and I spent the entire day doing sketch comedy. We dressed in burlap sacks, we did a mock cooking show, we were taken to the stocks and forced to bathe near the end of the day. That event was nothing but fun all day long.
What would you tell a newcomer to look forward to in the SCA?
I’d tell them to try a little bit of everything, then to find what they loved and do it. I’d tell them that the best thing about the SCA is that we care about each other. I’d remind them that if everyone does a little work then no one should have to do a lot of work.
